Dr. Mauricio Zelaya, Economics Leader | PhD

Dr. Zelaya is an accomplished economist with extensive experience in econometrics and statistical modelling for both private and public sector clients. He specializes in the economics of innovation, industrial organization, and more generally, the application of economic theory to real business issues. His work in this area spans across numerous industries, from oil & gas and mining to finance, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals.

Dr. Zelaya has regularly conducted automotive economic research. He has led several projects with dedicated automotive sector analyses for clients including Toronto Global, City of Brampton, Waterloo EDC, Niagara FTZ.

Saad Usmani, Manager | MA

Saad is an economist with a background in economic research and analysis having previously spent time at economic think tanks in Canada, as well as an economic consulting firm in the US. He specializes in sector based analysis, labour market insight, regional economic performance, and public policy evaluation. Previously, Saad was an analyst at the Institute for Competitiveness & Prosperity where he worked on economic reports, policy briefs, research projects, and external presentations on a number of topics.

Saad has co-authored a number of economic research publications related to the automotive sector in Canada and Ontario. His publications include: ‘2015 Report on Ontario’s Economic Competitiveness and Prosperity’ and the ‘Future of Canada Manufacturing’ research series.

Jiahui (Ryan) Zhuang, Manager | MSc

Ryan is an economist with a focus in industrial economics. He has spent time working at economic think tanks and academic institutes in Canada, contributing to research on the topics of labour economics, innovation, and research & development. Prior to joining EY, Ryan was an economist at The Conference Board of Canada, where he contributed to various economic forecasting and research projects.

In his previous role as an economist at The Conference Board of Canada, Ryan was responsible for covering Ontario’s automotive manufacturing sector. His duties centered around monitoring and forecasting the sector’s employment and wage growth, as well as analyzing the long term impact of micro and macroeconomic trends on the sector.
