The Automotive Aftermarket Industry – Beyond Making and Selling Vehicles

The automotive aftermarket is a $21 billion industry that employs more than 400,000 Canadians.  Our members are companies that employ professionals who are dedicated to providing quality parts, products and vehicle service and repairs for over 23 million vehicles on the road today.  They work relentlessly to provide parts and services designed to last longer, perform better and keep Canadian drivers safe.  We are in every community, Canada-wide, representing the businesses that give Canadian vehicle owners a choice where to go for car care, even if it means their own driveway or a trusted service and repair facility.

NEWS | AIA Canada Appears Before the Senate Standing Committee on Transport and Communications

On May 17, 2017, France Daviault and Jean-François Champagne appeared before the Senate Standing Committee on Transport and Communications to deliver testimony on the committee’s current study on the regulatory and technical issues related to the deployment of connected and autonomous vehicles. The Senators were visibly interested in the aftermarket as is evident in the number of enthusiastic questions that were directed at France and JF. Take the time to watch the video of the presentation. France and JF deliver their opening remarks at around the 18:58:25 mark.

Key Issues

Vehicle Service and Repair Information

The Canadian Automotive Service Information Standard (CASIS) agreement, also known as the ‘Right to Repair’, ensures that Canadian automotive technicians have access to the service and repair information they require to properly service vehicles.

The aftermarket and vehicle makers are working together to ensure aftermarket technicians get the most out of CASIS, by identifying and resolving access to information issues; finding training opportunities; and providing a forum for discussion on relevant trends, processes, and emerging technologies.

Chief among these emerging technologies will be Telematics – the ability to wirelessly connect to a vehicle to send and receive information. Access to the data generated by ‘connected vehicles’ will be imperative to the aftermarket in order to maintain the principle set forth in CASIS – that service information should be provided in the same or similar manner and extent as is available to the vehicle maker’s authorized dealer network.

Industry/Product Standards

AIA is active in many areas of industry and product standards including:

  • Product standards for aftermarket parts;
  • Product stewardship programs across the country;
  • Promoting the value of vehicle safety and emissions programs;
  • Training standards; and
  • Educating consumers through the Be Car Care Aware vehicle maintenance awareness program.

Skilled Labour, Training and Apprenticeships

Although there is a current lack of labour market industry data, the automotive aftermarket needs are growing in many areas such as employment, specialized educational opportunities, financial support for training programs and apprenticeships and tax credits to help those choosing a career in the trades.

To address these needs, AIA works with federal and provincial government departments, as well as provincial skills councils, and advanced training and educational facilities.

While building a campaign to promote a better image of the industry and the types of jobs in high demand, AIA is also focusing its efforts on recruiting more women into the sector by creating a leadership network to ensure women are represented at the executive level in automotive aftermarket organizations.
