Right to repair: What members need to know about the implementation in Quebec
The Province of Quebec’s new right to repair legislation has come into effect on October 5, 2025.
AIA Canada has been a champion of Right to Repair and fully supported Bill 29, now Loi protégeant les consommateurs contre l’obsolescense programmée et favorisant la durabilité, la réparabilité et l’entretien des biens, which implements these regulations in Quebec. Throughout numerous consultations, our advocacy emphasized practical access to tools and data, realistic timelines, and the need to avoid loopholes that could undermine the right to repair.
AIA Canada has worked closely with the Office de la protection du consommateur in Quebec to ensure fair access to vehicle data for all repair shops, whether independent or franchise-based.
A key economic driver
Quebec’s auto care industry contributes $8.1 billion to the province’s economy and supports over 100,000 jobs. Several national aftermarket banners are also headquartered in Quebec, further underscoring the strategic importance of this sector to the local economy.
Why the right to repair matters
Access to vehicle data will allow all repair shops to service modern vehicles without barriers. For consumers, this means:
- Greater transparency and safety,
- Lower maintenance costs thanks to increased competition,
- More choice in service providers.
Delaying the regulation would simply postpone these benefits unnecessarily for Quebecers.
