Message from the President

Message from the Chair

As I reflect on my time as Chair in 2025, I am proud of the continued strength and progress of AIA Canada and its members. This year carried a particularly important responsibility—one shared with the Board of Directors and the Board Executive Committee—as we undertook a comprehensive search for a new President and CEO, who began her term in 2026. This was a significant undertaking and a meaningful accomplishment, and its impact will be felt for years to come as it helps shape the future of AIA Canada, our members, and the broader auto care sector.

Advocacy remained a central focus throughout the year, with AIA Canada continuing to champion Right to Repair and actively engage governments, stakeholders, and industry partners across Canada and beyond. These efforts reinforced the Association’s role as a trusted voice for the industry and helped sustain momentum toward a fairer, more competitive marketplace.

We also remained deeply committed to supporting the industry through education, research, and connection. National events, training and up-skilling initiatives, and the delivery of timely, relevant industry research provided members with valuable opportunities to learn, collaborate, and make informed decisions as the sector continues to evolve.

I would like to sincerely thank the AIA Canada Board of Directors, volunteers, committees, divisions, and the AIA Canada team for their dedication and leadership, as well as our members for their continued engagement and support. As the Association looks ahead to its next chapter, including a leadership transition, I am confident in the resilience of our industry and the strong foundation we have built together. Serving as your Chair has been a true privilege, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help support the future of Canada’s auto care sector.

Government relations

2025 has been a dynamic year for Canada’s auto care sector, marked by political shifts, trade uncertainty, and groundbreaking policy developments. From the federal election and escalating U.S. tariffs to Quebec’s new right to repair regulations and growing global collaboration, AIA Canada has remained at the forefront, advocating for our members and the auto care industry at large.

The top issues to highlight include:

  • Trade, tariffs and a federal election: 2025 began with heavy political and economic turbulence – U.S. tariffs escalated cross-border tensions, and Canada entered a federal election. AIA Canada responded swiftly, launching AutoCareVotes.ca, our first national election hub to mobilize members and put right to repair front and centre. Nearly 300 letters were sent to candidates, and shops welcomed local candidates to see firsthand how the right to repair supports affordability, small business, and consumer choice.
  • Post election rebuild: With the Liberals securing another term, we refocused our messaging around their core priorities: economic sovereignty, support for domestic industries, affordability, and sustainability. These themes directly reinforce the urgency of national right to repair legislation. AIA Canada has since engaged federal as well as provincial officials across Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia, ensuring right to repair remains part of key policy conversations while trade uncertainty continues.
  • Quebec – leads the way on right to repair: Quebec continues to set the benchmark with new right to repair legislation coming into effect on October 5, 2025. Working with government officials and the Consumer Protection Office, AIA Canada equipped members with guidance materials, resource links, and a bilingual webinar to ensure shops were ready for implementation.
  • International partnerships: Right to repair is a global movement and AIA Canada continues to represent member interests internationally through the Associations in Motion network. Our 2025 global engagement highlights include attending Autopromotec in Italy this past May and AAPEX in November where we participated in strategic planning sessions with international right to repair partners and shared emerging trends and common challenges. In September, we joined the Auto Care Association’s Legislative Summit in Washington, meeting with Congressional offices to support the U.S. Repair Act and advocate for harmonized repair standards across North America.
  • On-the-ground advocacy: Members of Parliament, media, and momentum: Over the summer AIA Canada surveyed its national memberships and confirmed what we hear daily from shops, distributors, and suppliers: 79 per cent identify right to repair as their top issue and 100 per cent agree it must remain AIA Canada’s primary policy focus. These insights shaped our fall priorities and continue to strengthen the case we bring to government. National visibility also grew through opinion pieces posted in The Hill Times and Autosphere. To support policy development, we submitted recommendations to the federal budget process positioning right to repair as a practical solution to offset tariffs and strengthen Canada’s competitiveness.

Workforce development

In partnership with the Government of Ontario and Plug N’ Drive, the Innovation in Automotive Training program returned for another year, with four colleges across Ontario: Cambrian College, Conestoga College, Fanshawe College and Mohawk College. This program aims to address the industry’s labour and skills shortage through career exploration opportunities and up-skilling programs.

“The program truly helped validate my previous experience from India and gave me the confidence to apply my skills in the Canadian industry. The structure, mentorship, and exposure to the local automotive landscape made a real difference, and I am grateful for that.”

Governance Committee

The Governance Committee supported the Board in reviewing and modernizing AIA Canada’s By-laws to ensure continued compliance with the Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA). The By-laws had not undergone a comprehensive update since 2009, with only minor revisions made in 2020.

In collaboration with legal counsel, the Governance Committee conducted a detailed review of the current By-laws. As a result, 43 amendments have been proposed, including 39 requiring an ordinary resolution (simple majority vote) and four requiring a special resolution (two-thirds majority vote), to be presented to members at the 2026 AGM.
