I-CAR Canada offers the “Introduction to electric vehicle service considerations” course to prepare professionals for the unique challenges of EV service and repair. This training emphasizes safety and specialized procedures essential for working on high-voltage (HV) systems. 

Introduction to electric vehicle service considerations: What you will learn 

This course introduces the core responsibilities of EV-trained technicians. Many vehicle manufacturers now mandate that technicians must ensure that EVs are electrically safe before any service begins. Due to the complexity and variety of EV systems, education programs focus on brand-specific procedures and regulatory compliance. The course also covers the designated repair areas required for EVs within collision facilities, which must follow strict safety standards.

Participants in this course will gain essential knowledge in several areas: 

  • Understanding of basic electrical principles and HV safety 
  • Identification and use of proper personal protective equipment 
  • Procedures for safely disabling and reactivating HV systems 
  • Use of special service tools for EV diagnostics and repair 
  • Safe removal, storage, and installation of HV batteries 
  • EV cooling system service, including pressure testing and air evacuation 
  • Thermal management systems, including positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heating 
  • Diagnostic testing such as electrical bonding validation, HV isolation tests, and use of a milliohm meter
