Webinar: A guide to ADAS bumper repair and refinishing

August 21, 2025

As Advanced Driver Assistance systems (ADAS) become increasingly common in modern vehicles, the importance of proper bumper repair and refinishing has grown significantly. In this webinar, Matthew Moore, senior trainer at Axalta Coating Systems, and Neil Murphy, technology manager — color science and global color systems, address the complexity behind refinishing ADAS bumpers, and what businesses can do to ensure complete, safe, quality repairs.

The importance of correct refinish processes

ADAS sensors, often embedded in bumpers, rely on precise signal transmission. Incorrect paint selection, improper application, or failure to follow original equipment manufacturer (OEM) procedures can interfere with radar function—leading to system failures, safety risks, and costly rework.

Murphy stressed that only ADAS-approved paint formulas should be used, and that technicians must avoid altering colours or formulas, as this compromises sensor accuracy. Additionally, paint thickness and material composition directly affect radar performance.

Following the guidelines

Refinishing processes must align with OEM-specific instructions, which vary by make, model, and trim. Higher-end models may include more sensors or different configurations. Always consult the latest technical documentation before starting any work.

Axalta is preparing a technical bulletin outlining best practices, but Murphy emphasized that standardization across manufacturers is still limited. While industry groups are working toward alignment, procedures will likely remain OEM-specific in the near future.

Key takeaways

To ensure safe and accurate repairs, technicians must:

  • Apply only paint systems approved for ADAS applications.
  • Follow all OEM procedures for preparation and refinishing.
  • Check technical documentation for each individual vehicle.

This webinar serves as a crucial reminder that refinishing work on ADAS-equipped vehicles is no longer purely aesthetic—it is integral to the vehicle’s safety system.
