About Bill Gardiner
Bill Gardiner is a life-long “car guy” and auto mechanic. Coming from a family of mechanics, Bill didn’t have to go far for guidance and mentoring. In his early years, he learned from his father, Howard, who was a tank mechanic for the Canadian Forces before and after World War II. Bill’s uncle, Ken, was also a mechanic and for decades taught auto mechanics at Lakeshore Collegiate Institute in Etobicoke, Ontario.
At Applewood Heights Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario, Bill took every technical course they offered, including wiring, drafting, machine shop and, of course, auto mechanics. Afterwards, he enrolled at Centennial College in Scarborough Ontario, attending the Motive Power and Auto Mechanics Apprenticeship training program, followed by an apprenticeship at a busy shop in his hometown of Mississauga.
Bill achieved his Interprovincial 310S Auto Mechanics License in July 1977, and has been active in the auto repair industry ever since, both as an employee and a hands-on business owner. Bill stayed up-to-date with clinics taught by respected instructors in advanced auto repair, such as Ron Brown, John Cochrane, and Geoff Findlay. Bill wrote the “Trouble Shooter” column in the Toronto Star’s ” Wheels” section from 1986-1997 and has appeared weekly on TSN’s Motoring TV and MotoringTV.com for all of its 32 years on TV.
Some of the past and current sponsors of Motoring TV and Bill’s “Motoring Tip Of The Week” segment include Quaker State, Midas, Pennzoil, Walmart, Michelin, Shell, Dry Shine, Silver Wax, WeatherTech and Stark Auto Sales.
