Back to basics: Vacuum coolant fillers

April 11, 2025

Sometimes, returning to the basics can make the difference between a quality and a failed repair. Vacuum coolant fillers can cut down on comebacks and speed up everyday processes.

In the past, the technician would either fill the reservoir or the radiator, run the vehicle, and then burp the air from the system, which is a lengthy and challenging process, especially with the addition of rear heating and cooling in some SUVs.

Not only is a vacuum filler faster, but it also doubles as confirmation that the system can maintain a vacuum or pressure. Unobstructed cooling has become more critical with the increasing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs). If there is an airlock or a leak in the cooling system of an EV, it can lead to battery pack damage or a fire.

Multiple original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) not only recommend but may require vacuum fillers to refill the coolant system. This process can eliminate the need to bleed the cooling system, avoiding the airlock issue that can cause many comebacks if not noticed before delivery. Some vehicles need a scan tool to fill the cooling system correctly. Always reference vehicle-specific procedures for tools needed, capacities, and coolant type.

Using a vacuum to fill the cooling system, pulling from a reservoir of new, clean, specified coolant to fill the system after service, can also improve productivity.
